Elderflower, Yarrow, Calendula, Peppermint
Ingredients: Sambucus canadensis, Achillea millefolium, Calendula officinalis, Peperita x mentha.
Directions: Dispense a few tablespoons of the HERBAL STEAM blend into a medium size stock pot. Add a few inches of water. Cover and bring to boil. As the infusion is heating up, prepare a space for your steaming. Choose a location where you can safely set the hot pot and bend over it with maximum comfort for your neck and shoulders. You will need a large bath towel to use as a tent. It is also helpful to have a song playing so you can keep track of the length of time you are steaming. When the pot has reached a boil and is pouring out steam bring it over the to steam station you have created. Remove the lid and observe the steam rising. Cautiously, test the temperature of the steam. It will be extremely hot at first, you may watch the steam fill the room with the aroma of flowers for a minute. Steam burns are very painful, so you will want to exercise caution not to burn yourself. As it becomes tolerable, position your head about 12 inches above the steam and move your head from side to side, taking deep breaths the whole time. As the steam becomes more gentle, cloak the towel over your neck and shoulders, using your arms to create vents for the hot air to escape. Take deep breaths of this flower medicine. Steam for at least 10 minutes, blowing on the water to create more steam when the heat is dying down. Follow your steam by cleansing your face with cold water.

Steam baths are one of my favorite ways to keep the respiratory system and skin healthy in wintertime - they usually provide a hefty mood boost as well. I regularly set these up and guide friends & clients through them, and people almost always tell me that they are blown away by the difference a steam makes and that they plan to work the ritual into their cold season self care routine. Steams are phenomenal at clearing out the sinuses and loosening up phlegm. Steam weekly, every other week, or monthly - just make sure you work this ritual into your schedule, I know you will not be disappointed. Elderflower & Calendula are brightening, Yarrow is astringent, and Peppermint is stimulating.
