DIY Hand Sanitizer Recipe

We all know washing our hands with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds is the best way to keep our hands clean and virus free. However, when you are without a hand washing sink - hand sanitizer is the next best thing.

People have been messaging us for weeks asking for hand sanitizer - our response has been make it yourself or buy from X. Eventually, people started pointing out to us that they could not get the ingredients and the hand sanitizers they found were out of their price range. So, we polled our community and asked if they would like us to make a small batch of hand sanitizer in addition to sharing recipes. The answer was a resounding yes. We are selling the hand sanitizer basically at cost because 1. it is a basic necessity to keep people safe during a pandemic 2. we do not want to make money off of hand sanitizer!

We are happy to sell our hand sanitizer to anyone who needs it, however, if you have the means to make it yourself for you and your community - we highly recommend you do that instead of buying it from us.

Here is the World Health Organization approved hand sanitizer recipe for big batches: https://www.who.int/gpsc/5may/Guide_to_Local_Production.pdf

We made a simple small batch version of hand sanitizer and are sharing the recipe here. The most important thing is that your finished product is above 61% alcohol content. And that you sanitize all your materials and work station before starting the recipe. Our hand sanitizer mist is 71% alcohol, just to be super safe - follow it up with a moisturizer.

Ingredients & Materials:

+ 95% ETOH (we used our organic, US grown corn alcohol, which we buy in bulk for tincture -making. You can also use everclear or 99% Isopropyl Alcohol.)

+ Aloe Vera Gel

+ White Pine / Balsam Fir Hydrosol (You can use witch hazel or water if you don't have hydrosol handy)

+ Beakers for measuring

+ Scale for weighing

+ Blender

+ 2 oz bottles with mister tops (or whatever you want to use to dispense the final product)

Directions:

  1. Sanitize your workspace and all the instruments you will be using.

  2. Weigh 750 g of 95% alcohol (by volume, 860 ml)

  3. Weigh 150 g of Aloe Vera Gel (by volume, 150 ml)

  4. Weigh 100 g of White Pine / Balsam Fir Hydrosol (by volume, 100 ml)

  5. Combine ingredients in blender and blend thoroughly.

  6. Pour into spray bottles. This recipe will fill 20 2 oz bottles.

The final product is between 71-73% ABV and is thin enough to spray through a mister.

Shake well before using! If you don't want to make it yourself, you can buy a bottle from us here.

Take care!
